How does excerise affect the pH levels in your mouth?

Kitty Kat asked:

I bought some pH strips for a science fair project i am doing. In the instructions it said for saliva testing not to test after excerise. It said they are more acidic or something. Is this true and why?

when you exercise, more carbon dioxide is produced as a byproduct of cellular respiration. carbon dioxide in a person’s blood is mostly transported as bicarbonate ions. in other words, the carbon dioxide reacts with water to create bicarbonate ions and hydrogen ions. The excess of hydrogen ions will cause a drop in pH.
