Is there such a thing as too acidic cervical mucus?

just_me asked:

I have ph test strips and i was curious so I’ve tested my cervical mucus for 4 days now during my fertile period and it says it’s anywhere from 5-6 and according to the chart it is very acidic. Will any sperm servive in this? We aren’t trying for a baby yet, not until December possibly.

I don’t know, but that was in my dream the other night!! I swear. In my dream, the doctor was explaining that sometimes the cm is just too acidic… Sorry I don’t have the answer, but I think it’s a good question~

One procedure a doctor can perform is to test the cervical mucus. Cervical mucus plays an essential role in conception, as it enables the sperm to make it all the way to the egg. The sperm are unable to do this if there is little or no cervical mucus present. Another factor involving cervical mucus is that it could be too acidic. It is necessary for the mucus to be alkaline. If it is acidic, it will kill the sperm before they reach the egg

    Apparently the answer is yes

  3. It’s possible that you are contaminating when you check and actually swabbing VAGINAL fluid and not just CERVICAL. It’s difficult to avoid this unless you are using a speculum to cleanly expose the cervix. Normal vaginal secretions are acidic.

Regardless, all of this is besides the point, because if you have a cervical mucus problem (and it’s not even clear that you do), the cleanest solution is to bypass it with a catheter, meaning do an intrauterine insemination.

I realize you are not at the stage where you want a baby yet.

But eventually when you DO, you can just give it a try and the odds are that most likely you will get pregnant on your own. If not pregnant after 1 year, then you can get some help.

    Good luck!
