The label on the shampoo claims that it is pH balanced. What exactly does pH balance mean?

pH balance refers to a netural pH, one that is neither acidic or basic. This would imply a pH of 7

pH is the level of hydrogen concentration in a substance. 7 is normal and above that, the solution is basic and below 7, the subject is acidic. if it is balanced, it shouldnt be acidic or basic and therefore shouldnt be harmful

It means that it is buffered, and that its pH won’t change much whatever you do with it. You should find in the ingredients a weak acid and a salt of that weak acid somewhere – a buffer solution.

it means that the pH is nutral (at 7) when it could be acidic( anything lower than 7. or basic which is any thing higher than 7.

    hope that helps

pH is a measure of the activity of hydrogen ions (H+) in a solution and, therefore, its acidity or alkalinity. The pH value is a number without units, usually between 0 and 14, that indicates whether a solution is acidic (pH 7).

A pH scale is basically a scale of acid and bases and it ranges from 1(very acidy) to 14(very basic). For example water would be a 7 on the scale and a lemon would be a 4. So, if the shampoo is pH balanced it just means that is has a healthy balance of acid and bases.
