The tap water at our home ( small city America) has a ph of 5 (tested by good quality test strips)?

earthcitizen29 asked:

I read that the normal is 7. We filter the water before drinking. Can there be any other adverse effects of drinking water with low ph.
Thanks.

The pH of tap water is often slightly acidic due to dissolved CO2. It is perfectly safe. Your stomach is even more acidic than that.

That is quite acidic. I would wonder why; i.e. which chemical is making it that acidic. I wouldn’t think the pH would harm you but I would sure wonder what the chemical was that was responsible. I don’t think carbonic acid (dissolved CO2) would be that low. I would suspect the pH paper. I wouldn’t think low pH would be very good for your teeth.

    young ph miracle

You mention filtering the water. Filter systems can actually lower the pH of water if it uses an ion exchange system. A pH of 5 can be achieved from CO2, but the water has to be ultra clean. Try testing the water without the filter.

I would consider restesting the pH of your water. If your pH is that low, you can probably say goodbye to anything in your house made of metal that touches the water (hot water heater, copper piping, iron piping, shower heads) unless your water provider uses a phosphate inhibitor. Most water systems keep the pH between 7-8.5 to prevent corrosion. Your water provider or health department need to be notified if your pH is really 5.
